I use GRUB because it's more featureful IMO than syslinux and because the configuration and installation process for it is actually quite simple for me. Hopefully the GRUB team develops just as painless a path for GRUB to do the same. Syslinux is just fortunate to have it in their design right now that appending multiple initrds is rather painless, apparently. I kind of see it as a positive that they're going through multiple options in that bug report. They really didn't have anything to do with the changes, and it just so happens that they have to look at a way to allow early-in-boot microcode activation. However, I think this change in microcode handling will be soon resolved by the GRUB team. Microcode updates generally are a nice thing to have but not necessary by any means for the vast majority of people.
